Homemade DVR
People have become increasingly frustrated with the DVR services that are available from cable companies. Cable companies such as TiVo enforce a lot of restrictions to the way your DVR system is setup. Back in 2002 Isaac Richards became so frustrated with the cable companies that he decided to make his own homemade DVR. This homemade DVR is made up from readily available computer parts and is based on the open source Linux operating system.
This homemade DVR project has now grown into the
Myth TV project. For anyone who is technologically minded they can now have their own homemade DVR which they can fully customize to their own needs. It is an open source project so software updates can be downloaded for free from the internet meaning that you can keep your own homemade DVR system up to date.
The Myth TV homemade DVR system can be purchased as a kit for $700 to be assembled and customized at home. They have all the functions of a TiVo DVR and also many functions of a regular PC. Although the price tag is expensive, for those who have the technical know how and wish to have freedom away from the cable networks then this is the ultimate solution.
