DirecTV TiVo Partnership extended till 2010

The DirecTV TiVo partnership has been extended for another 3 years up until 2010. This will allow existing DirecTV subscribers who use TiVo DVRs to have continued support and maintenance from DirecTV.

Yesterday we reported on TiVo successfully suing Echostar over DVR patent rights. This new DirecTV TiVo partnership actually prevents TiVo and DirecTV being able to sue each other over DVR patent rights.

DirecTV was actually looking to stop using TiVo DVRs for their customers next year but have decided to extend the DirecTV TiVo partnership probably because they need more time to make the transition to the new DVRs they intend to use and also that they are worried about having to pay licensing fees to TiVo. Since TiVo cannot sue DirecTV in this DirecTV TiVo partnership DirecTV will not be paying any licensing fees.
