Philips DVR Patent | No More Skipping DVR Adverts
The growth of the DVR industry has been substantial over the past few years and one of the favored characteristics of consumers is the ability to fast forward and skip DVR adverts on recorded shows. This has been a growing concern for much of the TV broadcasting industry as it has potential devastating effects for advertising revenue.
However the ability to skip DVR adverts could be set to change as broadcasting companies begin to fight back. A new US
patent was filed by PHILIPS (the inventors of the DVD) at the end of last month which could potentially see the end of skipping adverts on your DVR. The Philips DVR Patent describes technology capable of the following:
1. Preventing you from fast forwarding and skipping DVR adverts.
2. Preventing you from changing channel once adverts start.
This Philips DVR Patent will undoubtedly prove unpopular with DVR users but would make advertisers extremely happier as well as broadcasters who will be able to increase advertising revenue. However something of this nature could deter users form their DVRs since the ability of skipping DVR adverts is one of the major advantages of a DVR device.
The patent even discusses the ability for broadcasters to actually charge you to skip past the DVR adverts. This sort of technology if taken up by broadcasters would definitely be unpopular with DVR users and with a company like PHILIPS behind it then this could likely become a reality. PHILIPS who we love for bringing us DVD technology can not be given any praise by most regular DVR users for their proposals in this patent.
