Yahoo enters PC DVR market with Meedio

Last week internet search giant Yahoo acquired most of the software producer Meedio. This further confirms suspicions that Yahoo is attempting to enter the regular television market and expand beyond the mainstream internet world. The main area of Meedio's expertise lies with PC DVR software and media organization functionality which it then links to regular television sets.

The PC DVR technology basically turns a regular PC into a DVR player and connects it to the television, thus cutting out the need for a set top box and allowing for extra functionality.

Yahoo has bought the rights to PC DVR technology and intellectual property. Several employees of Meedio will be joining Yahoo's digital home team.

The new PC DVR and media organization technology acquired by Yahoo could allow them to make regular Yahoo services available through a regular television. Services such as Flickr, online games and Yahoo's LaunchCast could be made available through a home TV set. They already offer a more basic service through a partnership with TiVo.
