Sony PSX DVR Media Center

Will we ever see the Sony PSX DVR Media Center released as an updated product in the western world. For those of you that do not know about the Sony PSX it is a multimedia center which contains a DVR, DVD recorder and a host of other cool features.

The Sony PSX was released in Japan in December but was never released in the western world. Although there were plans to release the Sony PSX in other territories it was repeatedly put on the backburner until it was no longer viable to launch it with the launch of the Playstation 3 being so close.

The Sony PSX DVR media center was based on the Playstation 2 and was able to play all the Playstation 2 games. The PSX was in fact at it’s time a very good multi media center and would have been competitive in the media center and DVR market. The actual graphical interface of the PSX was used in the PSP and will also be used in the new Playstation 3.

The PSX is no longer on sale now and people are left wondering whether Sony will make a move back to the full multimedia media center solution once again. Whether this could be in the Playstation 3 itself looks likely. If the Playstation 3 is to replace the PSX it would be a good explanation as to why Sony seemed to abandon the PSX project.

There is a strong rumor that the Playstation 3 will have DVR functionality and will also link up with the PSP. This news was apparently from an unnamed Sony developer, but the source is not confirmed. We will have to wait for the official conference in September to see is DVR functionality is true. Sony is expected to be concentrating on competing with the new Xbox which would mean a full blown media center which goes even further than the new Xbox. However whether Sony can pull this off is uncertain, the price of the Sony Playstation 3 is already a growing concern and with full Media Center features it could really push the price up.
