Freeview to come to DVRs in the UK
Friday, May 26, 2006
The UK public has been very grateful for the Freeview service offered in the UK allowing over 30 channels to be viewed through a digital set top box. The only cost for the service is only the digital decoder box needed to convert the digital signals ready for a TV which can be picked up for as little as $50.
DVRs in the UK are comparatively rare compared to other developed countries and are generally only used with BSkyB packages. There are currently no DVRs sold to work with the Freeview service. However the promotional companies behind the Freeview service will now be putting together a promotional effort to encourage an industry standards label for Freeview DVRs which will make the prospect less confusing to consumers.
British Telecom already has a Freeview DVR in the works which will be a BT vision Hybrid which merges with Freeview broadcasts to offer Video on Demand services that are provided through a broadband connection.
