Issue found with Series3 and JVC A/V receivers
The CNET Labs during a test with a TiVo Series3 and a JVC A/V receiver discovered an annoying (to say the least) glitch. When connected via HDMI to the receiver the TiVo DVR activates a copy protection feature that makes impossible to watch content recorded on some HD channels. They tested it with content coming from HBO HD, HDNet and Universal HD.
CNET discovered this while they were trying a workaround to the absence of the support for TiVoToGo on the Series3. The lack of the latter feature prevents the user to transfer the archived video to a Windows PC so the only solution is to record the video in real time on a video recorder.
However on video recorded on those channels DRM is triggered and a message saying that the content cannot be copied on VCR, DVD, or any other media device appears. When contacted about this find TiVo replied that it’s either an A/V receiver error or the broadcaster has wrongly flagged for copy protection the content. It must be said that the DVR has done its job because it responded in the right way to a content copy protected.
CNET later tried the DVR with other brands receivers and all worked fine until they returned to JVC with another model. In this case they were not able to transfer the content. So the conclusion is that thanks to DRM if you have a JVC A/V receiver and you fished out $800 for a TiVo Series 3 you are not able to fully exercise your rights.
